Writerly Navel-Gazing ~ Week 1: Question 1

Tell us about your favourite writing project/universe that you’ve worked with and why:

Throughout my life, I have worked on seven major writing projects. Of these, I would say three are dead in the water, never to be dredged up again. The other four have legs, and I aim to work on all of them in the future.

Aside from Salt, all my stories actually take place within the same high fantasy world, but on different areas of the map. Though each story is planned as a stand-alone piece, I do make references to characters, places and events that appear in the other books. My boyfriend once compared this setup to Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series and I think that sums things up quite nicely, so in terms of my ‘favourite universe’ I would say that this epic sprawling fantasy realm is my favourite.

My current work-in-progress, The Mayor, is set in the ‘western’ part of the map in something not too dissimilar from the 18th century. The story’s main location — New Hardway — is loosely based on Key West in Florida. I would have to name this particular writing project as my favourite at the moment, simply because it’s presently taking up such a large chunk of my brain… and my life!

  1. The Mayor is simultaneously my favourite and least favourite of your writing projects – and you know EXACTLY why that is.
